Newcastle in early stages of talks with potential investors

June 10 (Reuters) – Newcastle United signed a multi-year shirt sponsorship deal on Friday with a Saudi Arabian company linked to the club’s owners, an agreement which may be scrutinised under the Premier League’s rules on associated party transactions. ‘Football clubs are using their social media to push betting. It is probably part of the deal they have with gambling companies,’ MP Carolyn Harris, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Gambling Related Harm, told Sporstmail.

The ad attracted sharp criticism from an MP who campaigns for tighter regulation on gambling. On Saturday, Arsenal promoted a Super Boost offer with its ‘official betting partner’ directly above a retweet from the Junior Gunners, featuring a young mascot giving a virtual team talk to the players before their game against Leeds United. Sela will replace Chinese gambling firm Fun88 on the front of Newcastle’s match day shirts.

Managing director Lee Charnley and his commercial team were dispatched to the Far East at the end of last season and returned with a new sponsor in the shape of Chinese firm Fun88, sparking suggestions of further investment from that region. There is widespread concern about the exposure of children to gambling brands through football and where advertising appears on social media, often endorsed by the club, it is a direct pitch to youngsters viewing those channels.

The ban was lifted two months later, but the league said such will be subject to scrutiny from an independent panel to ensure they reflect a “fair market value” and are not a means of distorting revenue to allow for greater spending under Financial Fair Play rules. The advert would  fall foul of the new rules from the Betting and Gaming Council, which come into force from March 1, but it would not be restricted because the firm involved is not under the BGC’s jurisdiction, a spokesman for the representative body told Sportsmail.
