Pretty Privilege
By SANNEKE MANDJES
In the Western world, pretty privilege is deeply integrated into working society. It is widely understood that privilege, whether it comes from race, gender, or sexuality can impact a person’s access to opportunities. The term pretty privilege already suggests: it is when someone has advantages because they are pretty. It can mean that people are giving you opportunities, are being nice to you or you just not having to try as hard because you are physically attractive. Mainly women feel the pressure to fit and commit to the ideal of beauty. Unfortunately the closer you are to those ideals, the more often you will be labelled pretty and benefit from that prettiness across the Western society. A society where having a good career is a big part of our lives. A ‘good-look’ will help people to become more successful and have more benefits on the labour market.
